Dear Ken,
Belatedly, I'm writing to correct your comments in the spring 1996
issue of Tanzer Talk (Vol.14 #2) about the number of Tanzer 16's
built.
The last Tanzer 16 built by Tanzer Yachts in Edenton, NC was #1585
and was sold by Dickens Dock to a Peter E Bent of Raleigh. The
first built by Tanzer Industries was #100. Prior to that of course
some, probably about 50 were built by Tanzercraft which closed in
1965. At that time the boat was called the Constellation.
During the period 1965 to 1967 Tanzer Industries built a number of
units which were sold to Columbia Yachts which company then
marketed the boats as Columbia 16's. George O'Day was running
Columbia Yachts at the time and his book "Sail in a Day" is
illustrated throughout with a Columbia 16. All in all the 1600 men-
tioned by Sailing World is not far out.
The sail numbering books in which the sail numbers of the several
Tanzer models are still available and from these it can be checked
that the numbering from 100 to 1585 was consecutive and does
not include the Tanzer Overnighter of which 506 were built.
